There are those who chuckle about producing a watercolor painting with pencils. Perhaps it is too much like coloring book art. In some respects, it is very much akin to crayons and outlined illustrations of subjects we like. But it isn't that easy; or maybe it is that easy. Maybe that's why it is becoming so popular. Believe it or not, it wasn't until a few months ago that I had ever heard of watercolor pencils.What I like about using watercolor pencils is the ease and mobility of getting it all together for some plein aire kind of art. It is especially enjoyable if you are into sharpening pencils. Be sure to have a good supply of the little red pencil sharpeners. Some are made in Mexico, a few are from Thailand, but most are from China. If you are a sharpener expert, you will spend the extra two dollars for the German version. Is it sharper? The shavings are thinner. The points on the pencils are the same no matter where the blade was made. Trying to
sharpen the pencils with a knife isn't recommended.
